How to apply Social Insurance Number (SIN) online

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Introduction:

If you’ve recently arrived in Canada, you may have experienced the frustration of waiting in long lineups at Service Canada centres for 2-3 hours just to obtain your Social Insurance Number (SIN) if you didn’t receive it at the Port of Entry (airport or land border). However, rest assured that I have some great news for you and other newcomers to Canada who will be arriving soon!

The Good News:

I am pleased to share with you that the Canadian Government is taking significant steps to modernize its departments and enhance its services for the public. Service Canada has initiated a new online application process for Social Insurance Numbers (SINs) through its My Service Canada Account (MSCA) to support this goal. This new service is available to all eligible individuals, regardless of their status as new immigrants, temporary residents, or Canadian citizens. It is a welcome development that will make government services more accessible and user-friendly for everyone.

As per the official news release on August 17, 2023, by Employment and Social Development Canada, this new digital service will improve efficiency and most importantly, will save the time of the clients who used to spend hours queuing up outside Service Canada centres, especially the new immigrants and international students.

How to Apply Your SIN:

To apply for a SIN online, you will need to create an account on the Service Canada website called My Service Canada Account (MSCA) and provide some basic information, such as your name, date of birth, and other information as asked. You will also need to upload a copy of your identity document and proof of status in Canada. You can also use your Unique Client Identifier number (UCI number) which is mentioned on the permit documents, or your Permanent Resident card can be now used to register yourself for MSCA.

Once your application is processed within 5 business days, you will receive your SIN in your MSCA which can be downloaded.

The online application for SIN is a convenient and secure way to apply for Canadian Citizens, New Immigrants and Temporary residents to work in Canada, file taxes, and access government benefits and programs.

If you are eligible for a SIN, I encourage you to apply online. It is the easiest and most convenient way to get your SIN number.
